The Profiteering Party of Democratic Chicken Littles

Our frightened leadership in Washington, DC finally reached an agreement which claims to temporarily  avert the Fiscal Cliff. No tax increases for the middle class! Higher taxes on those who have the audacity to be wealthier and more fortunate than the rest of us! No spending cuts!

The collective mass media, that ignored this looming crisis until November 7th, the day after the election, has breathed a huge sigh of relief.

The bottom line is the federal government is still borrowing 40 cents for every single dollar it spends. And the Middle Class is finding each paycheck received after January 1st to be 2% lighter, or $1,000 for each $50,000 earned, or roughly $20.00 a week. All that "without" a tax increase.

Before we can return to worrying over who will be in the Superbowl, another financial crisis looms.  The federal government has maxed out its credit cards again, and will hit the debt ceiling. Round two of finger pointing, and smoke and mirrors rapidly approaches.

While both political parties engaged in massive hair pulling and wild accusations in the days leading up the fiscal cliff deadline, forgotten in the entire mess was the failure of this nation's leadership to act on this looming deadline for the past 16 months since the fiscal cliff legislation became .  .  .  law!  Yes, they created the crisis and thought themselves reasonable and moderate enough to resolve it in a timely fashion. They didn't. President Obama insisted on putting it on a shelf until after the election. Now they are kicking the can down the road again and expecting a different result?

In keeping with the now Mayor Emmanuel "Never Let A Crisis Go To Waste" philosophy, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has been sending out a series of breathless fundraising appeals. These appeals include a National Sweepstakes for transportation for two to Washington, DC with four nights of hotel accommodations for two for the Inauguration. I hope they had a license(s) to conduct such a national sweepstakes. To their credit, no such appeals took place on the Republican side.

Our profiteering Democratic friends used some pretty extremely over the top language in raising funds under the "Have His Back (President Obama)" appeal.  Here are but a few examples:
  • December 19, 2012 4:58 PM): "Speaker Boehner just held a 51-second press conference to lay out his demands in the fiscal cliff negotiations. Here's his latest offer: Nothing." "Time is running out for the Republicans to come to their senses before the fiscal cliff deadline. We have to show that we're standing strongly behind President Obama to make the rich pay their fair share." (Democratic Headquarters)
  • December 23, 2012 5:29 PM): "Republicans in Congress have lined up to block any "Fiscal Cliff" deal with the White House. Now, middle class Americans could see their taxes increase by $2,000 on January 1st unless Boehner and the Republicans back down from their extreme stance. This mindless Republican obstruction has to stop." "Your donation will help us call out Republicans for putting millionaire tax breaks and corporate special interests before the middle class.  If we can reach 25,000 new members supporting President Obama's agenda before the year-end deadline, it will send a blistering message to Boehner and the Republicans." (Democratic Headquarters)
  • December 26, 2012 1:51 PM): "Republicans in Congress are just five days away from throwing the country over the fiscal cliff, just to protect tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires. Reckless doesn't even begin to describe it." "Your donation will help show just how committed we are to taking on the Super PACs and big-money outside groups trying to derail President Obama's agenda." (Kelly Ward, DCCC Executive Director)
  • December 27, 2012 11:27 AM): "President Obama won re-election, but our fight is not over. In four days, our economy could go over the fiscal cliff because Speaker Boehner and House Republicans refuse to budge on tax breaks for millionaires. It's reckless -- but it's exactly what the Tea Party wants." "House Republicans think they can get away with taking our country to the brink time and time again. It's critical that we demonstrate how united and committed we are to ending the obstruction once and for all." (Democratic Headquarters)
  • December 28, 2012 11:58 AM): "Right-wing extremists in Congress aren't done trying to block anything and everything President Obama proposes." "President Obama's re-election was a stinging rebuke to the right-wing extremists that rule the Republican Party. Despite this the Tea Party wing of the Republican Party is digging in its heels. Let's reinforce the lesson of the 2012 election." (Barney Frank)
  • December 30, 2012 12:48 PM): "If we can reach 25,000 strong before tomorrow's year-end deadline, it will be an incredible show of strength against Speaker Boehner and the obstructionist Republicans." "With your support, we'll hold the Tea Party Republicans accountable for protecting their ultra-wealthy buddies at the expense of the middle class. (Brandon English, DCCC Digital Director)
  • December 31, 2012 (10:02 AM): "Tea party groups and right-wing special interests are out to do everything they can to block President Obama's agenda.  If we can reach 25,000 new members supporting President Obama's agenda before the year-end deadline, it will send a blistering message to Boehner and the Republicans. (Democratic Headquarters)
  • December 31, 2012 (4:02 PM): "If we can reach our goal before tonight's year-end fundraising deadline, it would be a powerful show of strength on behalf of the middle class against the Republican agenda. (Nancy Pelosi).
I won't even try to rebut some of that nonsense, it would be like trying to debate a habitual fabulist. The message that rings loud and clear is: President Obama won! According to the DCCC, this means there can be no opposition to the President's policies over the next four years. What the President wants, he gets! Like a king or dictator?

I would check the United States Constitution but I'm pretty sure that's not in there. I do recall something about checks and balances.

Just how did the Democrats behave when George W. Bush was reelected President? Did they shut up, sit down and vote anyway the President wants? Or did they engage in opposition (now called obstruction) tactics? How quickly everyone forgets.

I do have to give the Democrats a big thumbs up for messaging. According to those multiple emails, anyone who opposes President Obama is a RepublicanTeaPartyObstructionistRight-WingRecklessExtremistwhoisagainsttheMiddleClassandwillthrowusoverthefiscalcliff!

Trying saying all that in one breath!

Perhaps its time for Democrats to return to school and take a few civics classes? Followed by some civility lessons?

Will Congressman Brad Schneider become a leading voice of reason in Washington in the face of that sustained roar of breathless unconstitutional extremism? Will he denounce the shameless profiteering of his party when a crisis arises?

Don't hold your breath!
